Strength Starts with Smart Movement
Romanian Deadlifts (RDLs) are a brilliant way to build strength in your legs, hips, and back. However, they only work well when your form is correct. Whether you’re lifting at home, in a gym, or with a coach, using proper technique keeps you safe and helps you get more from each rep.
At The Training Gyms, we coach people of all ages and fitness levels. Our personal trainers in Northampton often start with RDLs because they’re simple, low-risk, and very effective.
3 Cues to Improve Your RDL Form
If you’ve never tried RDLs before — or aren’t sure you’re doing them right — these three cues can help. They’re the same tips our coaches use in sessions every day. In fact, they’re often the first things we teach new members.
1️⃣ Bar Over Your Feet
Begin with the bar directly over the middle of your foot. This helps you stay balanced and reduces pressure on your lower back.
2️⃣ Shoulders Rolled Back
Before moving, roll your shoulders gently back and down. This keeps your upper body steady and your spine in a safe position.
3️⃣ Keep the Bar Close
As you lower the bar, keep it close to your legs. For example, it should stay just a few centimetres away — or even lightly touch your legs. This simple cue helps you stay in control and reduces the risk of strain.
Why We Teach RDLs in Northampton and Beyond
We use RDLs in all five of our gym locations. They’re easy to learn, challenging in a good way, and give results. That’s why our personal trainers in Northampton include them in so many programmes.
Many of our members say it’s the first lift that made them feel truly confident. For example, someone new to lifting told us, “I’d never touched a barbell before, but learning RDLs this way made it feel safe and achievable.”
Whether you’re building strength, improving posture, or easing tightness in your back — RDLs can help.
Designed for Real Life, Not Just the Gym
You don’t need to be a weightlifter to benefit from RDLs. In fact, most of our members simply want to move better in daily life. That’s why our personal trainers in Northampton use RDLs with people from all walks of life.
These movements help with tasks like lifting shopping bags or sitting and standing with better posture. Also, they build confidence and strength at your own pace — not anyone else’s.
So remember, it’s not about lifting heavy. It’s about lifting well.
