So today, we’ve got another question this time from Allison,

and it is “How do you decrease your risk of Osteoporosis and Osteopenia?”

So I’m going to pass this over to Stephen.

Now Allison was talking specifically because she was aware she’s

actually going through the menopause now.

Stephen: So a lot of women that either they’re coming up to the menopause or going through or having gone through the menopause realize that they’re at an increased risk of Osteopenia, or like Mark says, Osteoporosis. Now, the best way or the most effective way to actually decrease this risk is to alkalize your body. So when I say “alkalize your body” I mean put things into it that actually will alkalize it rather than acidify.

So, for example, lots of vegetables and some fruits. The thin-skinned fruits such as blueberries and strawberries are very good at alkalizing your body. What happens is when you have an acidic body, your body actually takes away something called Glutamine from your muscles. So basically, it breaks down your muscles. But also, it takes out calcium from your bones, so it breaks down your bones.

So, if you’re having an acidic type of diet, which means things like processed foods and things like that, you’ll actually increase your risk of Osteopenia and eventually Osteoporosis. So, one of the great things you can do is really try and alkalize your body. And another thing you can actually do would be to do resistance type training because the stronger your body is, the less risk your bones have of decreasing in density.

Mark:  I mean, it’s been shown that actually doing resistance training will increase your bone density as well, which is obviously what you want.

Stephen:  Yeah. And we’re not talking lots of long running outside for hours on end because actually, with that you can become acidic.

Mark:  Yeah. Because that’s not resistance training.

Stephen:  That’s not resistance training. So, resistance training mixed with eating a very alkaline type of food nutrition plan would be the most effective way.

Mark:  And another little side note that might be counterintuitive to some people is that squeezing lemon and squeezing lime into your water will actually alkalize your body when you drink it. So, you think that lime and lemon is acidic. But actually, when it’s in your body, it’s actually alkaline.
