“I could barely walk”: Kevin’s Journey at The DVCC

After having two knee replacements 5 years ago, Kevin Byrne was left in constant levels of excruciating pain…

On ridiculous levels of painkillers and finding it increasingly difficult to move, Kevin ended up not socialising, distancing himself from his passions and became somewhat isolated.

Since coming to the DVCC over the past 4 months, Kevin’s life has completely changed, all of his friends seeing and commenting on his progress.

He is now walking with a single crutch and well on his way to rehabilitating his knee so he won’t need it at all any longer.

Kevin is a real inspiration to all of us at The DVCC and has shown that no matter what, change is always possible.

“Five years ago, I had knee replacement surgery. But this one was
always in pain, I was given ridiculous levels of painkillers and I ended up not being able to do anything, which really frustrated the life out of me.

I got into a point two or three months back where I was really quite low.But I’ve been coming here now and everyone is really impressed with my progress. Everyone goes: “Oh I can see all that difference!”, “Oh really?”The enthusiasm is absolutely amazing, and it’s good fun. I can see and feel that I’m coming along nicely. By January I want to be walking without that crutch.I’m sleeping better, the pain is less. Tiny little things that you don’t- you know, that you used to struggle with, you know, now happen.Go along and have a try, because if you don’t have a try, you’re never going to know.”
