Josh: Hi, this is Josh from the DVCC and I am sat here today with Kath Dogherty. We would just like to share a little story about Kath’s transformation and a little ‘road bump’ that she’s had to deal with in the past few months.
To give you a bit of background, Kath has recently suffered an injury; Kath – would you like to tell us a little bit about that injury, please?
Kath: About 12 weeks ago, I fell over backwards and fractured my coccyx!
Josh: Ok… so we won’t go into details about how you did that, Kath! But obviously, a fractured coccyx is a very painful injury.
Kath: Extremely painful
Josh: Obviously, you had to have a lot of time off and you couldn’t train initially, can you tell me how you felt?
Kath: I couldn’t train for about 8 or 9 weeks after injuring myself.
Josh: What could you do in that time?
Kath: Nothing, except sit on the sofa, walk slowly – I could barely walk – I couldn’t do any exercise whatsoever. I couldn’t drive a car; I spent most of the time just sat on the sofa.
Josh: So you were pretty limited. How did you feel?
Kath: Very annoyed with myself!
Josh: But what you have done afterwards is actually very very good.
Despite the fact that Kath is still not 100% as these things take time to heal, Kath has sat around and hasn’t let it bother her; she has got back into training. Tell me what you have been doing?
Kath: I have been working upstairs, doing personal training, one on one sometimes; and just slowly trying out different exercises to find out what I can and cannot do. I have added weights on gradually, bit by bit; knowing when to stop when it gets uncomfortable. I am being brave and trying other things that I thought possibly would hurt, but found out it doesn’t hurt as much as I expected, so then increasing weights and exercises.
Josh: Good for you; so you are taking action to get better. How do you find yourself feeling since you have been back and doing all those things that you were doing before?
Kath: Much better, much more energised; wanting to come up at least one or twice a day, just to get myself back to the previous level of fitness that I was at before.
Josh: We have actually just done a progress tracker right now and I can tell you that, in this time, Kath has managed to still build 2.5 lbs of muscle, even though she is suffering with an injury and still working around that.
So, Kath, have your goals or anything like that changed since having the injury?
Kath: No, I still wanted to get my body fat levels down; now it is back at the level it was before anyway, so the next goal is to get it down a further 2%, which was the original plan back in August or early September, before I injured myself.
Josh: What kind of message would you give to people who may be in a similar situation to you; who have hurt themselves and cannot do a lot of things that they have been doing and they maybe are not feeling so good?
Kath: It is worth coming up, having a chat, discussing what you can and cannot do. Find out your limits, try exercises out and be brave enough to say to yourself “No, that hurts”, but then actually coming up and improving yourself. Because I think if I hadn’t come up and started trying to get back to normal, then I would have just sat at home and eaten myself into a frenzy!
Josh: Thanks very much for that, Kath. This has been Josh and Kath Dogherty from the DVCC. Hopefully you found a few things that can help you; have a nice day!
