Josh: Hi, this is Josh from the DVCC; I am here with Sarah Selvey, who has been a client at the DVCC now for over 3 years. I would like to talk to her about some of the things that she has implemented that have allowed her to be so consistent over the years.
I will now pass you over to Sarah, who will give you a bit of her background from before she joined the DVCC.
Sarah: I have always been quite interested in fitness and have been a member of bigger gyms; I used to do quite a lot of swimming and cardio classes there, and I had also worked occasionally with personal trainers one to one. But I found, from coming to DVCC, that out of all the gyms I have tried, the DVCC has really had the greatest impact on my general level of being toned and also has had a big impact on my diet, which surprised me. When I first came here I actually was not aware of how holistic the approach of the gym was; I came specifically for the training and the healthy eating was a side that I wasn’t really aware that DVCC focused on. Initially, I have to say, I was a little bit dismissive because I felt that I was quite a healthy eater anyway; so I have really surprised myself – it has been quite a slow burn, how I have changed my diet. If someone had said to me when I came, “You will be craving greens for breakfast after a few months here”, I would have said “Don’t be silly, I am not going to do that!”
One thing I have found is how much you can change your taste buds – I realised that, if you just stick with something for a few weeks and try it, I just found then that I really wanted those foods and I was really looking forward to them. That’s not to say I have completely cut out other things that people might think of as less healthy, but I have probably just got a more balanced diet now.
Josh: Would it be possible to give some specifics about certain things you may have changed, from before you were a client to what you would do in your daily life now – in terms of diet?
Sarah: I used to eat a lot of cereal for breakfast; now I always have eggs, either with spinach or with other green vegetables. I often keep vegetables that I have cooked the night before; I cook more so they are ready, because one thing I found was not having time to do things, and it can feel quicker to throw a bowl of cereal together than cook some eggs and vegetables. I have cut out potatoes, bread and pasta – all the classics; I used to think before that they were not really doing me any harm, I didn’t have that much weight that I wanted to lose. But I actually don’t miss them at all.
Josh: Do you now feel any different from doing all those kind of things?
Sarah: Yes, I feel like I have got more energy; I work out quite regularly here at the DVCC, 5 or 6 times a week; I feel it does make a difference. Particularly with the breakfast, I have really noticed a difference; in the early days when I came and I had had cereal, I would be hungry an hour later, even after a workout; whereas with eggs and vegetables I can go all morning and don’t get hungry.
Josh: So that’s a little tidbit of information from Sarah, about some of the things that have allowed her to be so consistent over the years and for her to get such great results; hopefully you can take some of that away and implement that in your own life.
This is Josh and Sarah from the DVCC; have a nice day!
